This painting depicts a passage from the Bible where Abraham is going to sacrifice his son, Isaac because the Lord told him to do it. Abraham was so obedient to his holy savior that just before he went to bring his knife to Isaac's neck, an angel appeared to stop Abraham and a ram was now there for the sacrifice instead. Many people remember this story about faith in God and how it benefits us to follow through what God wants us to do. Even though this story seemed horrific in what could have happened, it has a positive message in the end.
As you look at this painting you can see that the artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio has chosen to paint at the crucial, dramatic moment where everything changed. You can see the twists in the arms and bodies, the light is evenly dispersed throughout the scene, the movements of everyone except the ram and the dark shadows brings you into the horror yet spiritual beauty. This artwork is definitely in a Baroque style based on those details seen in it.
